Town of Hilton Head Island issued the following announcement on February 1.

Islanders Beach Park at 94 Folly Field Road is getting a new pavilion that will give visitors with disabilities or other special needs a chance to enjoy views of the beach.

Work on the pavilion is set to begin this week. The Town of Hilton Head Island has contracted with Nix Construction Company to build a handicap accessible covered overlook pavilion adjacent to the existing beach boardwalk. Anyone visiting the park can use the pavilion, but it has been specifically sized and designed for individuals with disabilities using guidelines from the American Disabilities Act. The pavilion will feature a wide entry way for wheelchair access and benches for seating.

“This project is the direct result of a local resident reaching out to Town officials with the idea for a covered overlook at this beach park to accommodate those with special needs and disabilities, and their caretakers,” said Taylor Ladd, a Project Manager for the Town’s Capital Program.

“Thanks to the efforts put forth by a local resident working with the Town, this project was adopted in Our Plan as a parks and recreation action item. It has been a dedicated process to get this project underway and I am excited to see it built. This pavilion will allow anyone with limited access to comfortably enjoy the ocean breeze and views of our beautiful beach,” Ladd said.

Crews will start bringing building materials to Islanders Beach Park this week. Construction on the pavilion is expected to be completed prior to Memorial Day.

The Town invites beach park visitors to continue enjoying the park and boardwalk to the beach but be aware that construction will be occurring on the property over the coming months. For more information, contact Taylor Ladd, Project Manager, at 843-341-4607 or TaylorL@hiltonheadislandsc.gov.
