A South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) safety project to add a signalized crosswalk and flashing yellow arrow turn signals at William Hilton Parkway and Squire Pope Road resulted in the loss of a signal detection loop, causing increased delays to eastbound traffic.
The loss of this detection resulted in the signal phasing providing a full left turn phase, even when no traffic is turning left from westbound William Hilton Parkway onto Chamberlin Drive.
To ensure a timely resolution of this detection and signal phasing issue, the Town of Hilton Head Island had the detection loop replaced on the evening of Tuesday, March 7, and activated the flashing yellow turn arrows early Wednesday morning, March 8. Motorists travelling through the work areas are advised to use extra caution.
