As work continues on the Cross Island Parkway conversion project, the SC Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has modified the paving process for the 7.5-mile road to result in a much better ride quality for motorists during construction.
APAC-Atlantic, Inc., (APAC), a contractor for the SC Department of Transportation (SCDOT), has been repaving the road as part of the project to convert the former toll road to a now toll-free highway. The project includes pavement removal, pavement reconstruction and resurfacing, and signage and striping along the parkway and ramps from U.S. 278 Business to the Charles Fraser Bridge.
The toll plaza was removed in the spring and paving work began shortly after.
Since late Spring, APAC has removed old asphalt and repaved sections of the road with new asphalt. Crews paved the first 1.5 miles section with a single, thicker than normal asphalt lift, a layer of paving material applied to a base or a previous layer. Upon evaluating this section, the project coordination team determined it was better to place two thinner lifts or layers of asphalt throughout the project, providing better ride quality on the road.
Within the next couple of weeks, APAC will repair the initial thick lift section that was started in the east bound left lane of the Cross Island route. This will improve the ride in that section until the next lift of asphalt is applied. The final lift of surface course asphalt, which will reflect the finished product and best ride quality, will be worked on late summer and early fall 2022.
