BEAUFORT, S.C. (April 21, 2022) – Renowned planner and land use expert Victor Dover, of Dover, Kohl & Partners, will speak at the USCB Center for the Arts at 5:30 p.m. April 26 about the challenges facing the Lowcountry as development pressures increase.
The talk, entitled Facing a decade of planning challenges: What’s ahead for Beaufort and the Lowcountry, will also include a Q&A. Seating will be on a first-come, first served basis, but those who want to attend are asked to register. The event is free. It will also be livestreamed on the City of Beaufort’s Facebook page.
As housing demand has increased in the Lowcountry, it has forced development pressures farther into the rural edges of our communities and caused a dramatic rise in housing costs. New residential construction farther from the central core of our towns and cities strains existing infrastructure and increases the costs of providing municipal and emergency services. Between 2010 and 2020, Beaufort and Jasper Counties grew by over 15%.
How do we cope? What role does regional cooperation play? Can we accommodate all these new residents and visitors in our communities and on our roadways without sacrificing our environment and sense of place?
Dover is a nationally renowned planner and land use expert and will offer a smart growth perspective that illustrates how we can meet the needs of lifelong residents and new transplants alike, all while retaining the Lowcountry character and natural resources that define this region and drew us here in the first place.
The event is sponsored by the City of Beaufort, USCB Center for the Arts, and the Coastal Conservation League.
