Town of Hilton Head Island: Town Names Road into Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park as Harriet Tubman Way

1

Town of Hilton Head Island issued the following announcement on March 30.

In recognition of the 200th birthday of Harriet Tubman, famously known as the conductor of the Underground Railroad, the Town of Hilton Head Island has named the road into Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park as "Harriet Tubman Way."

Tubman, who was born in March 1822, served as a scout, spy, guerrilla soldier, and nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War, including time spent on Hilton Head Island. "As we celebrate March as Women’s History Month, this is a great way to honor Harriet Tubman, her bravery and her accomplishments. She led many enslaved persons to freedom," said Jenn McEwen, Director of the Town's Office of Cultural Affairs.

The road sign was unveiled at a recent event hosted by Historic Mitchelville.

"We knew that we eventually would need a name for the road that winds through Historic Mitchelville. This is the perfect time to name the road after this iconic woman who fought from freedom right here on Hilton Head Island," said Ahmad Ward, Executive Director of Historic Mitchelville.

Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is located off Beach City Road.
