Town of Hilton Head Island: 13 Local Nonprofits Receive $338,825 in ARPA Funding Funds will address COVID-related programs

Town of Hilton Head Island issued the following announcement on December 21.

Thirteen local nonprofit organizations have been awarded $338,825 to help them continue addressing challenges created by COVID-19. 

The funding is part of a $5 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 grant the Town of Hilton Head Island received. The funds were provided to local governments to help them respond to the negative impacts of COVID-19, including healthcare, housing assistance, childcare and education, rent and utility assistance and food insecurity. 

Of the total grant dollars, $1 million was earmarked to support nonprofits providing services to low- to moderate-income residents of the Town of Hilton Head Island, through the ARPA/SLFRF COVID-19 Fund the Town established at Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. 

This is the first of two grant cycles. The second cycle will be distributed in the spring of 2022. 

Grant recipients in the first round include:

  • Hilton Head Island Recreation Association: $6,250 to be used for childcare scholarships.
  • Lowcountry Legal Volunteers: $22,125 for expenses related to the Housing Protection Program in Hilton Head Island.
  • Meals-on-Wheels, Bluffton-Hilton Head: $20,000 approved for meals to be delivered to low- to moderate-income residents of Hilton Head Island.
  • Memory Matters: $15,000 for scholarships to individuals who cannot pay for services due to the impact of COVID-19.
  • Mental Health America of Beaufort/Jasper: $24,000 for scholarships for low- to moderate-income individuals suffering from mental health needs due to COVID-19.
  • Native Island Business & Community Affairs Association: $50,000 for emergency housing assistance for residents who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19.
  • Programs for Exceptional People (PEP): $15,000 for scholarships for low- to moderate-income residents of Hilton Head Island.
  • Sandalwood Community Food Pantry: $50,000 for fresh food for clients.
  • Second Helpings: $25,000 to purchase food and/or food bags to distribute to partner organizations serving low- to moderate-income residents.
  • Society of St. Vincent de Paul Holy Family Conference:  $20,000 for emergency housing assistance.
  • The Children’s Center: $22,700 to supplement the cost of food and teacher salaries to benefit low- to moderate-income families.  
  • The Hilton Head Island Deep Well Project: $50,000 to provide emergency housing assistance.
  • The Hunger Coalition of the Lowcountry: $18,750 for food cards to be provided to families of Neighborhood Outreach Connection students.
