Town of Hilton Head Island issued the following announcement on November 9.
Hilton Head Island's annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at Shelter Cove Veterans Memorial Park at 10 am, Thursday, November 11, 2021, and feature speakers, local students and patriotic music rendered by local musicians.
"We urge all to come be a part of this event which will feature how our veterans work together in our community to make it a better place to live and work. The ceremony will showcase our community's diversity and demonstrate how our sponsoring organizations work to instill real Americanism in our youth," said Blaine Lotz, event organizer and a member of the Arthur E. Wiley Post 42, American Legion.
Major Clay Middleton, a U. S. Army National Guard officer, a combat veteran, and Bronze Star Medal recipient, will be the guest speaker. Major Clay is a Charleston native and resident, and a graduate of The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina.
Hilton Head Island High School senior Orlando Leyva, a South Carolina American Legion oratorical contest winner and graduate of the American Legion's Palmetto Boys' State program, will also speak at the ceremony.
Hilton Head Island High School NJROTC cadets will participate in the ceremony as members of the Color Guard. Cadet LTJG Madison Fly will offer a reading of the World War I era poem, "In Flanders Fields," and explain its origin and context.
American Legion comrade and local music professional Greg Whittaker and his group Modern Daze will provide patriotic music.
This event is sponsored by the Hilton Head Military Veterans Coalition, which includes the Navy League of the United States, the Military Officers Association of America, Alexander Wattay Post 185 of the American Legion, and Arthur E. Wiley Post 42 of the American Legion.
