Technical College of the Lowcountry: Student Enrolled In 'High-Demand' Fields Will Have Tuition and Fees Paid for Through S.C. Scholarship Program

Technical College of the Lowcountry issued the following announcement on November 4.

South Carolina residents interested in attending the Technical College of the Lowcountry in 2022 will have their tuition and fees paid for if enrolled in a high-demand field, according to an announcement made by S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster on Wednesday.

Under the “Workforce Scholarships for the Future” program, tuition and required fees at South Carolina’s sixteen technical colleges will be covered for residents enrolled in a high-demand field.

Designed to help address South Carolina’s labor shortage, the program will be funded initially with $17 million left in the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) fund. Gov. McMaster plans to call on the General Assembly for an additional $124 million to extend the program through June 30, 2024, he said on Wednesday.

Who is Eligible?

All South Carolina residents (adults and recent high school graduates) enrolled in a qualified program.

What Does it Cover?

Scholarship funds may only be used for associate degrees or industry credentials in high-demand careers such as healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality/tourism, computer science, construction, transportation, distribution and logistics, criminal justice, early care and education and human services.

Requirements for Students

Scholarship recipients will be required to maintain a 2.0 grade point average and complete one of the following requirements:

  • Be employed or,
  • Take a financial literacy course offered at the technical college or,
  • Complete 100 hours of voluntary time to a nonprofit or public-service organization.
The program will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2022.
