Beaufort County issued the following announcement on November 1.

Beaufort County has received notification today from the State Treasurer’s Office that the 1% Transportation Sales tax has collected over $119M as of September 30, 2021.

It is anticipated that over October, the county reached $120M. Beaufort County will coordinate further with the Department of Revenue to verify and file the appropriate paperwork to end the program. We will then notify residents and vendors the day to end collecting the tax.

This will return the sales tax collected in Beaufort County to 6%.

Voters approved the 1% Transportation tax in 2018 that was anticipated to raise $120M over 4 years. The tax is funding $80 million for traffic improvements along the U.S. 278 Corridor to Hilton Head Island, $30 million for Lady’s Island improvements, and the remaining $10 million for sidewalks and pathway improvements.
