Town of Hilton Head Island: Town Leaders Pledge Continued Commitment to Community-based Solutions for Corridor Project

Town of Hilton Head Island issued the following announcement on October 7.

The Town of Hilton Head Island has worked closely with community residents, stakeholders, the SC Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and other parties to ensure development of the most appropriate community and regional solution for corridor improvements on U.S. 278/William Hilton Parkway, from Moss Creek in Bluffton to Spanish Wells Road on Hilton Head Island.

A news article published on Wednesday in The Island Packet newspaper about the decision-making authority Town leaders have regarding the SCDOT project to replace the bridges to Hilton Head Island and enhance the roadway has raised concerns among involved parties.

"The Town does not wish to focus debate on authority to approve or veto the project. Rather, the focus is to work towards a local position and continue working with project partners to develop the most appropriate community and regional solution," said Town Manager Marc Orlando, ICMA-CM.

"At our Town Council’s Special Meeting on October 12, we intend to do a thorough overview of project goals and establish clear opportunities for SCDOT to improve the corridor and bridges," Orlando said.

Hilton Head Island Mayor John McCann said this project is perhaps one of the most critical highway improvement projects that will take place in Beaufort County and Hilton Head Island. "We have convened many public and committee meetings, reached out to residents and consulted with experts for valuable input on this project. We thank them and appreciate the tremendous amount of time and energy they have spent on this project," he said.

"Also, we thank Sen. Tom Davis, State Secretary of Transportation Christy Hall and Beaufort County Administrator Eric Greenway for their continued support for this important project, including a commitment to robust engagement with meaningful collaboration between the Town, County, and State," McCann said.

The Special Meeting of Town Council is 2 pm, Tuesday, October 12. It will be conducted virtually and can be viewed on the Town’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/TownofHiltonHeadIslandSC/.
