The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will soon wrap up a 10-month project involving the removal of toll booths and roadway improvements to the Cross Island Parkway.

APAC-Atlantic, Inc., the contractor for SCDOT, substantially completed all major scope of work tasks by November 30 as originally planned.  They anticipate completing any final tasks before the end of the year. At that point, the 7.5-mile-long road will be free of construction work.

APAC began work on the $12.7 million project in March. It included the removal of the toll facilities and asphalt milling, paving, and restriping. Approximately 46,000 tons of asphalt was placed during the phase of pavement work. Final pavement markings, grading and stabilization, new signage, and guardrail were completed in November.

The SCDOT is in the process of deeding the toll administration building and land to the Town for local public use, which will be determined later. The contractor is stabilizing all disturbed areas with turf and mulch. The Town plans to include future landscaping in this work area as part of its corridor improvement plans.
