Lowcountry Celebration Park, one of Hilton Head Island’s newest parks that reflects some of its coastal, historical and environmental attributes, was recognized with an Award of Excellence for its design.

The South Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (SCASLA) presented the award, which is the highest honor it bestows, at its annual conference held recently in Greenville, South Carolina. Chris Darnell, an Urban Designer with the Town of Hilton Head Island, and Wood and Partners, the firm that designed the park, accepted the award.

“We are thrilled to earn this esteemed award. One of our core values is to pursue excellence in all that we do. This park reflects the very thoughtful and excellent planning that went into its design and all the features included for families and individuals to enjoy,” said Jennifer Ray, the Town’s Capital Program Manager. Wood and Partners nominated the park for this award. “They led the design of this park. We appreciate their hard work and their commitment toward making this a first-class park for the community.”

Lowcountry Celebration Park, which opened in December 2020, is an exciting 10-acre community park located in the bustling Coligny Beach district on Hilton Head Island. Families visiting the park can be entertained with “The Adventure”, a large play structure replicating a historically significant sailing ship, an interactive water feature representing local ecosystems and the Sandbox Children’s Museum.

The park is organized around a large central lawn that serves as a multi-purpose event space fronting Pope Avenue, a heavily traveled corridor to the beach, and provides much needed open space, a playground and recreation assets in the most densely developed portion of Hilton Head Island. The community uses this new park as a host site for local art markets, outdoor concerts, festivals, and community events.
