Georgetown County issued the following announcement on February 28.
Free seminar offered on Heirs Property
The Georgetown County Planning Department and the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation will team up this month with the Center for Heirs Property Preservation to host a free heirs property seminar and clinic in Georgetown.
The event is set for Monday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m. at Howard Auditorium, 1610 Hawkins St. Anyone is welcome to attend.
The seminar will aim to help members of the public understand what heirs property is and typical issues that surround heirs properties. These issues include:
- How to clear the title to family land
- Probate issues
- Wills and basic estate planning to keep land from becoming heirs property
- And more.
Those who attend will also have an opportunity to consult privately with an attorney, free of charge, following the seminar. Anyone who would like an attorney consultation should bring the related deed(s), tax bills and probate documents for the property they would like help with.
“The Georgetown County Planning Department knows the difficulties property owners have when they do not have a clear title to their land,” said Holly Richardson, Department Director. “Heirs property cannot be subdivided among family members, it is difficult or impossible to obtain a mortgage and often housing assistance from nonprofits is not possible due to lack of a clear title. This seminar is a way for us to help. The Center for Heirs Property Preservation works to help families keep and protect their land, and we are fortunate to have them provide this free opportunity for our residents.”
