Beaufort County issued the following announcement on March 10.
On Monday, March 14, County Council will consider changing some animal control ordinances to help Beaufort County Animal Services better educate animal owners while also being more effective at prosecuting those who neglect or abuse animals.
“These changes will ensure that the Beaufort County Animal Control ordinances stay fair and practical,” said Tallulah McGee, Director of Animal Services. “We continue to be the leaders in the state for ensuring we protect our animals and our communities.”
Ordinance changes to be discussed include:
- A Judge will determine if a dog is a restricted Breed
- Creation of animal neglect charge. Punishment will be a citation and fine.
- Abandonment of an animal during named storms will be added as a crime. This will be a misdemeanor charge
- Dangerous dog determination application of requirements
- Application and requirements of a nuisance pet amended
The ordinances also include giving the County Administrator the ability to work with the Beaufort County Animal Service Director to establish a license and fee schedule along with a pet breeder license fee schedule.
If passed, the County Council will have a public hearing and two readings before it becomes an official County ordinance.
