Beaufort County issued the following announcement on December 6.

According to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, the Sales & Use Tax rate in Beaufort County changes on January 1, 2022. Because of this change, the Sales & Use Tax rate in Beaufort County drops to 6% beginning January 1, 2022.

Additional Accommodations Tax vary by municipality.

Beginning January 1, 2022, Beaufort County businesses should stop collecting this tax.

The 1% Transportation Tax became effective May 1, 2019 after Beaufort County voters approved the tax in 2018. The stated goal was raising $120 million for improvements to Beaufort County roads and bridges.

The tax is funding $80 million for traffic improvements along the U.S. 278 Corridor to Hilton Head Island, $30 million for Lady’s Island improvements, and the remaining $10 million for sidewalks and pathway improvements.

The tax was set to expire once the $120 million goal was met or after four years, whichever came sooner.

For retailers, the SCDOR’s free, online tax portal MyDORWAY is the fastest and easiest way for retailers to file returns and make payments to the SCDOR.

Beaufort County’s new Sales Tax rate and all local tax changes are automatically updated when businesses file their Sales Tax return using MyDORWAY, to help ensure their return is accurate. Plus, automatic checkpoints will help businesses avoid submitting an incomplete return.

If a business has two or more locations, consider utilizing the Consolidated Sales Tax Return, which allows businesses to file for all of their locations at the same time.
